So you understand the roaring wave of fear that swept through the greatest city in the world just as Monday was dawning--the stream of flight rising swiftly to a torrent, lashing in a foaming tumult round the railway stations, banked up into a horrible struggle about the shipping in the Thames, and hurrying by every available channel northward and eastward. By ten o'clock the police organisation, and by midday even the railway organisations, were losing coherency, losing shape and efficiency, guttering, softening, running at last in that swift liquefaction of the social body.

The Presentation – Simeon’s beautiful words for our lives today

Today is the Feast of the Presentation, when we remember Jesus being presented in the Temple 40 days after his birth. At the temple, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus met two elderly people, Anna and Simeon. Simeon’s words that day as he saw Jesus have become an important prayer, most commonly said during Evening Prayer and at funerals. In this video, I reflect on how that prayer became a part of me through daily prayer and what that meant when I heard it again at my dad’s funeral. It is still one of my favorites – offering a sense of peace on days and times when I don’t feel closure.
